"it's a zen feeling, connected to the road, absolute purity", etc. etc. wow, the person who came up with that should probably date their bike as well. sounds like it gives that person a hard on.............two types of rider, eh? it's kinda like the bible pusher coming up to you and asking, "are you catholic or christian?". wha? those are the only choices? actually, there are two types of bike riders: the ones who ride because they love it and the ones who ride to impress other people...apparently, the author of this subject quotation is one who strives to impress and probably falls painfully short of anything successful. i know some fixie/ fixy/ fixed gear enthusiasts on here will get butt hurt by this and that's okay by me....bring on the rants, because nothing about fixed gear "street" culture impresses me.

Hey Ho riders, problem... I used to run 49/ 17 gear ratio on a Flyer. Have recently purchased a Lemonde Filmore. It comes with a 44 up the front and rather than buy a new Chainring I was gone drop the size of my sprocket to try and find something that was closer to 49/ 17... I have had a look on ratio calculating sites however i find it all a little confusing... can anyone help with a straightforward answer???? Easynow x

My beloved industrial evil peugeot fixie was stolen. So, I just got'st me a circa '75 peugeot PX-10. I'm in the process of building it up. Gotta love the 70's frames with no braze-ons. For a steal bike, it is pretty light, with 531 Reynold tubing, and nervix lugs.

building a fixed gear and confused

i'm converting an old schwinn traveler in to a fixie. i plan on buying new rims with a flip flop hub, and with fixed/free sides. i installed a new bottom bracket, but when i started thinking about putting on new cranks with a new chain ring, and aligning that with the rear cog, i got stuck. the spindle on the bottom bracket i was told is too long (shimano un53, xl 118, 68 eb, bc 1.37x24 - i think the 118 is too big?)

How do i determine what size spindle to get with what cranks? I've looked at sheldon brown's site a bunch, he's the one who told me the spindle is too long, but i can't figure out how to get things straight.

any suggestions? thank you ~ j.

help...?

hi.
okay, so i just decided to (try to) learn to (try to) ride fixed. (i've only really even been riding since i moved here a couple months ago. i'm not exaggerating when i say i know nothing about bikes. but i'm learning. and i'm excited. and i love riding....)
anyway, i built a surly steamroller and it's all pretty and perfect and ready to be ridden. i went with clipless pedals and took him out once and realised that clipless was so not the way to go cuz on top of everything else that i was trying to learn and remember, the last thing i needed was to realise at the last second--as i was falling over, after i finally stopped (yay!)-- that my feet were fucking stuck to the pedals.
anyway... so i'm switching to clips & straps, while i'm learning anyway.
not that you all care about any of this probably. i'm just all excited about my new bike and stuff. i was just wondering if any of you might have any pointers/ advice.
maybe? please? before i die?
thanks.
~k

looking for 56cm - 58cm road frame (hopefully classic - without shift lever bosses) with horizontal drop outs, or better yet, track fork end, to turn into fixie. If you have a fixie that meets that, hopefully with a 42/15 that would be coolio.

I cracked my fixie's frame.

I'm coming in from Texas to visit some grad schools, and I don't have the money or time to box up my fixie and mail it to my friends apartment, which I can't mail it to there in the first place according to him. So I'm on the lookout for anyone with a 51-52cm fixed gear they would be willing to let me borrow and maybe to ride with in the city. I'm looking into moving there so I want to be with some experienced town riders. I live in Denton, TX and biking is good here, but it's no big city.

Contact me at freshpwee@gmail.com if you've got something in mind or can help out. Thanks!

I'm racing in a series over here that, from all reports, is nearly all double-track dirt and gravel roads. I'd like to build up a fixed rear wheel and still be able to brake as some of the races are in the Alps.

Need Feedback - Race/Ride idea

A friend and I are planning to put on a fixedgear road race/ride and I'm looking for feedback/ideas.

Tenitively called the Almanzo 100, it will start in Rochester, MN and end in Mankato, MN. Approx length should be about 100 miles. We want to focus it on fixed/singlespeed riders but maybe offer an "open" class for geared riders.

We are thinking of having about 3 or 4 checkpoints where riders will need to pick up cue-sheets to the next checkpoint.

I guess what I'm wondering is: should we have this "open" class? Or is there enough fixed & singlespeed road riders to keep it closed off? And should we include a little bit of gravel road to make things interesting?

Anyone have any other thoughts, ideas or even if think this is stupid? If you want, you can also visit our tribe board and chime in there. url=http://tribes.tribe.net/alleycat. There's two threads about it started titled Mankato and Almanzo 100.

Thanks.

It's always amazing how doing a little belated maintenance on a simple bike can make such a difference.

My chain had been a bit loose lately but I'd been too lazy to do anything about it as it's been about 14 F here lately. There were also a couple of other strange noises happening. When I got to school this morning I decided it was time to check in to tightening up the chain. When I did that I realized that all but one of the chainring bolts were nearly ready to fall out. Duh!

Man, the ride home was stellar! Nice tight chain and chainring.

Damn! I love riding fixed.

If you could build a bike from the BB shell up, what would it look like? OK, a fixie for the street, something that really wouldn't see track time.
I've been pondering the Dream Bike for a while and may find some change between all the lint in my pocket to fund it this year.

what would you do? what woudl your fixed ride look like

What (and where) are y'all riding?

Tell me about your rides!

So I confess-- I'm not riding fixed yet, but I will be soon. I'm building up a bike now (#3 in my collection). It's a cheapie, but I figure good for a first fixer, and everything can be improved as I can afford it.

The frameset is from a Puch 12-speed; lugged, decent-quality, but nothing fancy. I kept the front brake (weinmann sidepull)--all else was cheap suntour componentry and was trashed.

Building up a wheelset from scratch: front is the original hub (can't think of the brand at the moment, but runs OK) with new spokes. Rear is Phil Wood double-sided fixed (on order at my local bike shop--the only really nice part on the bike). Both laced onto a set of mavic tubular rims scavenged from a nice roadie I picked up this summer.

I'm planning a 52/17 ratio, and leaving my options open for the other side of the hub until I get a better feel for fixed. I'm pretty universally comfy in NYC riding 52/17 on my roadie (until I drink a lot of beer), but we'll see.

riding in west oakland on sunday evening.... jumped by 5 guys, though i have to give a big chunk of the "get away" love to my track bike! if it weren't for the pedals in motion and my feet strapped to em, i would have lost my balance and most likely ended up 20x worse than i managed......

hey, so i'm flying in to philly and i'll be in the philly/south jersey area for 10 days if anyone's around there and wants to meet up for a beer or anything...
i'd suggest a ride, but i don't know what i'll have there in terms of bikes.
i left the sweet old huffy i'm pictured with in my profile, but i'm afraid to see what kind of condition she's in. (that's sweet style, by the way. i love that bike.)
my birthday is sunday. this year instead of a cake i'm going to have a birthday-soft pretzel.

i'm accepting any offers and i appreciate all help and advice. i just read the replies--thanks. in the meantime, i switched to clips and straps. i realised that i had a harder time getting into & out of those than i had the clipless, so i switched back to the clipless and went out and had the fucking time of my life.
and i only fell over once!
(although i did come close a few times.)
bruised but not broken.
i have too much pride anyway; it can stand to be knocked down a bit.
so i'm mastering the slowing-to-a-stop by backpedalling. (and i'm digging the hell out of the extra speed and power and stuff you get out of using clipless pedals. nice.) but i can't get the skipping/skidding stuff down. i can't figure out how to unweight and/or pop the back wheel. i did it once but i was so surprised that i almost fell off. this will come in time i guess. (i always end up lifting the front wheel. help?)
anyway, thanks for your help. any thing else you've got is welcome.

I'm so stoked, I just got my first fixie. I've been trying to trade off a kegerator kit that I had laying around the house for a converted road bike. But, the stars must have aligned in my favor because the guy offered me a custom Zanotti road frame setup fixie with some really nice parts. This thing is soo sick, super light steel frame fillet brazed construction. I gotta stop typing and go pickup some new pedals so I can ride this beast.

My brand new track wheels just got stolen. Please read..

As some of you may know, two months ago I got hit by a car and my bicycle was wrecked. Last week I just finished building it.

A few days ago, I had my wheels stolen from 25th @ s van ness. They are white deep dish track rims. They are Campy Atlantas, powder-coated frost white and have no decals. Suzue Promax hubs. These are one of a kind so they shouldn't be hard to spot. If you know nothing about bikes even but see a very nice uncommonly white looking pair of rims, chances are these are them. Please call me.

I got lazy... Left my bike outside my house for 10 minutes. Now the wheels I just finished building are gone. My heart is broken.

Also, if you are friends with any messengers and other bike people in SF, please pass the word along.

If you see these somewhere, please buy them or take them and I will pay you back for sure.

Thanks in advance.

Chris Brennan.
