Hey Ho riders, problem... I used to run 49/ 17 gear ratio on a Flyer. Have recently purchased a Lemonde Filmore. It comes with a 44 up the front and rather than buy a new Chainring I was gone drop the size of my sprocket to try and find something that was closer to 49/ 17... I have had a look on ratio calculating sites however i find it all a little confusing... can anyone help with a straightforward answer???? Easynow x

sheldonbrown.com/gears/
44 is pretty standard for a production street fixie like the fillmo' .
49/17 has a gear inch rate of 77- not too bad for street, if you have the legs and experience.
a 44/15 will give you a slightly higher ratio of 78 gear inches
a 44/16 will give you 74, which is slightly lower.
I'd lean towards the lower ratio, especially if you are in hilly areas. If you are in flatsville, then go bigger. -

Re: Help with gear ratios............ Please
Sat, June 20, 2009 - 3:11 PMUsing the means of division..
Divide your chainring teeth by your cog teeth..
(this is BMX gearing)
*calculates*
2.75 is the result of a 44/16 setup, and is ideal for most..
Save for the fact that it's an even/even setup..
Which is a no-no on the street!
(your tire wears out in the same place - not evenly)
So "gear up" a tooth in front, or lose one in the rear.
My current would be a 48/17 (2.82)
(2.8 is ideal for my surroundings)
Keep the odd/even in mind and try a few cogs and rings out..
And you'll be fine.
